How Is My Data Managed When Selling My Phone?

If you’re thinking of selling your old phone, one of the most important things to do before you exchange it is to remove its data. Your phone will have all of your photos, messages, and emails, as well as sensitive information such as your personal details. As a result, it’s worth being fully in the know about how to correctly clear your phone’s data, and the steps we take to ensure all your data is wiped when we receive it.
In this guide, we cover the essential steps to carry out before you sell your phone. We’ll also cover our secure, reliable data erasure process that every device we receive is put through, ensuring your details are completely removed.
Why erasing your phone’s data before selling is important
Modern smartphones store many of your personal details. While the first things that come to mind may be your photos, messages, and social media data, they’ll also store critical information such as your banking details, passwords, location details, and work information.
As a result, it’s important that you completely wipe your phone of all of your personal information before you sell it. This way, you’ll prevent anyone else from being able to access this data and use it for their own gain. To do so, simply follow our steps below.
How to clear data from your phone before selling
Before you sell your phone, you’ll need to carry out a few steps to make sure that your data is fully cleared and inaccessible to anyone who uses it afterwards. To completely clear your phone of your personal information, you’ll need to:
Back up your data
You’ll likely want to keep your data to use on your next phone rather than permanently removing it. So, you should first back up your phone’s data to another location so you can access it later.
This can be done through iCloud for iPhones or through your Google account for Android devices. However, you can also back up to a computer or an external hard drive if preferred. Doing this means that you can easily transfer all of your contacts, photos, messages, and everything else you need when you set up your new device.
To back up your data on an iPhone, go to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
To back up your data on an Android phone, go to Settings > Accounts > Google > Select the correct Google account > Select everything you want to sync with the Google account.
You can also back up your Wi-Fi passwords and other settings by going to Settings > Backup & Reset > Device Back Up > Back up to Google Drive.
Remove your accounts
After backing up your data, you’ll need to sign out of any cloud accounts to unlink them from your old phone. This includes any Apple ID, Google accounts, or Samsung accounts that you’re signed in with. This way, anyone who uses your phone after you sell it won’t be able to access your accounts, and the process of trading in your phone is much faster.
Remove SIM cards and memory cards
You’ll need to remove any SIM cards or memory cards from your phone before selling. SIM cards can contain contacts, messages, and network information, while memory cards can store photos, downloads, or documents. These can be accessed with a small metal SIM card tool or a similarly small, pointy item, such as a paperclip.
You’ll likely want to keep your memory card to use on your next device if you’ve got personal data saved on it. You’ll also need to keep your SIM card to use for your new phone, unless you’re switching networks.
If you’re no longer going to use your SIM card, we recommend destroying it by cutting through the chip to prevent anyone from accessing your details.
Perform a factory reset
Once you’ve completed the above steps, you’ll need to perform a factory reset to completely wipe your phone of all your data before selling. Once you do this, you won’t be able to retrieve any data the phone previously had, so make sure that you’ve backed up your data as described above beforehand.
To factory reset your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings.
To factory reset your Android phone, go to Settings > General Management > Reset > Factory Data Reset > Delete All.
