At Mazuma Mobile, we’re dedicated to making it easy for you to trade in your old Apple devices for cash while also contributing to a more sustainable future. Every year we receive thousands of devices from people looking for a convenient way to sell their used smartphones, tablets and other electronics, and we strive to ensure they have the know-how to do this as quickly as possible.

Apple devices are known for being a little bit trickier than most due to their top-of-the-range security features, such as Find My iPhone. So, today as a leading phone recycling facility, we’ll guide you through unpairing your Apple Watch, so you can confidently sell it on our platform and get the best value for your device.

Apple’s security features on their watches

Apple Watches have several security features to prevent theft and protect user data. One of the main features is Activation Lock, which is enabled when Find My is turned on for the paired iPhone.

Activation Lock makes it more difficult for anyone to use or sell a lost or stolen Apple Watch, requiring the user’s Apple ID and password to unpair, erase, or reactivate the device. So, when you decide to sell an Apple watch, you must ensure all this has been removed from the device, as it makes it much more difficult for us to process it. Plus, the watch must be unpaired and clear of these security features, so we know that you are the watch’s owner and haven’t just picked it up off the street or stolen it. Additionally, Apple Watches can be put in Lost Mode using the Find My app or iCloud.com, which allows users to lock the device remotely.

When is it time to sell an Apple Watch?

Much like iPhones, new Apple Watches are released on an annual basis. So, you may be upgrading yearly if you like to keep up with the latest technology. If this is the case, you may be building up a collection of Apple watches in your drawer or wherever you may be storing your old tech. If this sounds like you, using our services, you could get some cash for your devices and free up the space.

Alternatively, you may have used our sell my iPhone services and no longer own an Apple phone to pair up your watch to. If so, get a quote today and see what you can get when you sell your smartwatch. Whatever your reason may be, we are here to help!

How do I unpair my Apple Watch from my iPhone?

The most efficient way to do this involves the watch app on your iPhone. This allows you to unpair your watch, disable the Activation Lock and erase all the content from your watch. All you’ll need is your iPhone, the app and your passcode.

  1. Move your iPhone and Apple Watch close together.
  2. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  3. Browse to the ‘My Watch’ tab within the app and select ‘All Watches’.
  4. Next to each Apple Watch there’ll be a small ‘info’ button.
  5. Tap this info button next to the watch you want to unpair.
  6. Tap ‘unpair Apple Watch’.
  7. Confirm by pressing ‘Unpair [watch name]’
  8. If you have a data plan for your Apple Watch, you’ll now need to select whether you want to ‘keep’ or ‘remove’ the plan from your Apple Watch. If you are intending to pair your watch with a new phone, you’ll need to keep this.
  9. Tap to confirm.
  10. Before unpairing can begin though, you’ll need to enter your Apple ID to disable Activation Lock.
  11. At this point, your iPhone will create a new backup of your Apple Watch. This will then erase all content and any settings from your watch.
  12. You’ll then be free to set up your Apple Watch again by pairing it with a new device, and you’ll be able to restore any settings or content by using the backup on your iPhone.

How do you unpair an Apple Watch without an iPhone?

If you want to reset your apple watch, but don’t have your iPhone to hand, it’s still possible. You can unpair your watch and return it to factory settings in just a few simple steps, but keep in mind that doing this won’t create a back up in the same way it does when you do it on an iPhone through the watch app. Doing this also won’t disable Activation Lock, so you won’t be able to pair it with a new device until the unpairing process has been done properly through your phone.

  1. Open your Apple Watch
  2. Browse Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings
  3. You’ll be prompted to enter your passcode
  4. You’ll have two options at this stage, depending on whether you have a data plan for your Apple Watch. Select ‘Erase All’ or ‘Erase All and Keep Plan’ depending on your situation.
  5. This will reset your Apple Watch.

If you want to fully disable Activation lock without your iPhone, then you’ll need to log in to your iCloud. To do this simply:

  1. Access your iCloud account via iCloud.com in a web browser.
  2. Use your Apple ID to log in
  3. Select ‘settings’ and then locate your Apple Watch under ‘My Devices’.
  4. Click on the X next to your watch.
  5. Click confirm and you’ll unpair your Apple Watch and iPhone.
