Mazuma Mobile teams up with Homeless Charity

A MORECAMBE firm has renewed its commitment to support and raise awareness of the growing homeless situation in the UK.

Mazuma Mobile has provided support to Lancaster & District Homeless Action Service (LDHAS) who are currently supporting an increasing number of homeless people in the area with more than 100 people currently regularly using their services.

Established in 1987, initially by a group of local churches, the day centre offers a range of vital services including hot meals, showers and laundry facilities, clothing, toiletries, use of IT equipment and access to visiting agencies such as Citizens Advice, Red Rose Recovery, Acorn, Calico, The Well and a general nurse.

Currently operating from a large portable building located on a car park in Edward Street, LDHAS is celebrating its 20th anniversary of being a registered charity.

Phil Moore, Centre Manager, said: “Homelessness can happen to anyone.

“We have seen a marked increase in our client list over the last 12 months and the cost-of-living crisis will have an affect over the coming months.

“Every day we meet people who have become homeless due to many different circumstances. These include financial difficulties, relationship breakdowns, lack of social and family support, leaving care, prison or rehab, mental health, and substance misuse.

“We always welcome financial donations as we do not receive any government funding so need to generate income from donations, grant funding, fundraising and appeals.

” We are extremely grateful to Mazuma for their support as every donation makes a huge difference.’’

Craig Smith, MD of Mazuma Mobile, said: “We feel it is important to help good causes locally and we are committed to supporting the Homeless Action Service.

“They do an amazing job in helping people who need it most and I would urge as many people as possible to offer any support they can.’’

The charity costs around £150,000 a year to run.

It has recently purchased a new building in Aalborg Place which will allow the charity to expand and provide updated facilities.

The new building is ideally located just a couple of minutes’ walk away from the city centre and will provide much needed facilities to the homeless

As well as donations the charity also requires food items, especially milk, sliced bread, coffee, frozen chips, pies and sausages.

They also hold a limited amount of clothing and would be grateful to receive items such as men’s jeans, trainers, socks, boxer shorts, t-shirts, hoodies, coats, belts and gloves.
