It’s an exciting time for the gaming community, especially those with an interest in Nintendo. Features: What We Know So Far

One of the main things gamers want to know, is how the Nintendo Switch 2 is different from the original. We know that the original is a beloved device, so the second-generation version doesn’t propose to radically change everything about it, but builds upon the foundation with significant improvements in performance, display, and controls. Here’s what we know so far:

  • Display & Visuals: The original size came with a 6.3-inch 720p LCD screen. The Switch 2 has a larger 7.9-inch 1080p LCD screen. When docked, the new device can achieve up to 4K resolution at 60Hz, making the gaming experience exceptional on compatible TVs.
  • Controller: The original Joy-Con used a rail-based attachment system, whereas the new Joy-Con uses magnetic attachment for easier connection, with a larger and more ergonomic design. There’s also a ‘C’ button on the right Joy-Con that activates the GameChat feature, and optical sensors which provides mouse-like functionality in certain games.
  • Communication & Social: The original switch relied on a companion smartphone app for voice chat. Now, the Switch 2 comes with GameChat, a built-in voice and video chat system for communicating with friends and screen sharing.
  • Performance: Without going into heavy detail on the specifics, the main difference in hardware is that the original switch was powered by a custom Nvidia Tegra X1 processor, and the new one uses a much more powerful Nvidia Tegra T239. This results in faster load times and smoother gameplay experiences.
  • Game Library & Compatibility: The original switch came with some iconic games, but Nintendo have truly stepped it up in their 2025 variation of the device. Not only do users benefit from backward compatibility with most Switch games, but they also will have access to new exclusives like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza.
  • Storage: As expected, the Switch 2 will come with a larger storage capacity than the original. The Switch 2 has 256 GB of storage, which is a large step up to the 32 GB of the original, and the 64 GB of the Switch OLED.

The improvement in features we’ve seen will be sure to please both current and future Nintendo Switch fans, retaining some of the fan favourite aspects of the console whilst also offering an elevated gaming experience.
