Zeiss and Nokia aim to ‘set new imaging standards’ for phones

Optics specialist Zeiss has teamed up with Nokia on a partnership that aims to “set new imaging standards within the smartphone industry”.

The German firm will work with Nokia phone maker HMD Global to improve the quality of the overall imaging experience on phones, from software and services through to screen quality and optic design.

This new collaboration continues the shared history of Zeiss and the Finnish mobile brand.

The relationship between the companies began more than ten years ago and delivered innovations including the world’s first phone with a multi-megapixel camera.

Zeiss also worked with Nokia on the Nseries and devices featuring PureView technologies.

The companies said their new partnership will seek to co-develop “standard-defining imaging capabilities” for the smartphone industry.

Arto Nummela, chief executive of HMD Global, said the collaboration with Zeiss is an important part of the company’s ambition to deliver the best possible experience for its customers.

“Our fans want more than a great smartphone camera, they want a complete imaging experience that doesn’t just set the standard but redefines it,” he added. “Our fans expect it and, together with Zeiss, we’re delivering it – co-developed imaging excellence for all.”

Dr Matthias Metz, member of the executive board of Zeiss Group, added: “The collaboration of HMD Global with Zeiss for Nokia smartphones will again enhance consumers’ holistic imaging experience based on excellence and innovation.”

Earlier this year, Zeiss announced that its partner ExoLens had developed a new solution for the iPhone 7 – the ExoLens Case.

The case protects the phone and also acts as a mount for one of the three accessory lenses in the ExoLens PRO with Optics by Zeiss range. Users simply screw either the wide-angle, telephoto or macro-zoom lens into the case’s integrated thread to improve their images.ADNFCR-2155-ID-801837631-ADNFCR
