Motorola's mid-range Moto Z smartphone range has proven quite popular over the last few years, but as with any technology brand, there's a constant need to evolve or die. As such, the manufacturer has lifted the lid on the latest Moto Z iteration, which is set to introduce desirable new features to bring the device in line with 2018 standards.
The Moto Z3 Play takes the basic design principles of the existing Moto Z2 Play, while offering a range of subtle and significant improvements, including dual cameras, a larger screen, and support for the popular Moto Mod add-ons. The manufacturer is selling the Z3 Play as one of its most flexible and accessible phones ever, and the early signs suggest it will live up to this billing.
The Moto Z3 Play has already launched in a number of markets and will be rolling out globally starting this month. Although UK pricing is yet to be announced, it is expected that Motorola will once again be aiming to deliver premium performance at an affordable cost with its latest device.
The first thing you'll notice about the Z3 Play is its expanded six-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, which offers 13 percent more screen area and more pixels per inch than the Z2 Play within the same device dimensions, thanks to its edge-to-edge design. The fingerprint sensor has been located on the side to maximise the screen size, while the gesture-based One Button Nav bar at the bottom further improves usability.
This dedication to aesthetic quality extends to the dual 12MP and 5MP AI-powered cameras, which offer advanced depth-sensing capabilities and Google Lens built in, allowing the Z3 Play to automatically recognise and provide information on its surroundings. The front-facing camera has also been upgraded to an 8MP lens.
Internally, the Z3 Play features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor that's 30 per cent faster than the previous model, with 4 GB of RAM, 32 or 64 GB of expandable storage, and a robust 3,000mAh battery.
A range of Moto Mods and apps to improve your experience
As with the other members of the Moto Z range, the company's range of Moto Mods forms a key part of the Moto Z3 Play experience. These magnetic add-ons clip to the phone and add a range of different features, allowing users to change between them in seconds.
The Moto Mod range includes the battery expanding Turbopower Pack, the audio-enhancing JBL SoundBoost 2, the Insta-Share Projector that allows users to project a 70-inch screen from their phone, and the Moto Smart Speaker with Amazon Alexa functionality. All of these add-ons are designed to be compatible across the entire Moto Z range, including future devices.
Additionally, the Z3 Play once again offers Moto Experiences, a suite of convenience tools and functions to make the phone easier to use. It encompasses gesture-based controls to access key features, and automated capabilities such as a night display that adjusts the screen to warmer tones once nighttime hits.
The firm describes the Moto Z3 Play as “a high-quality, premium mobile experience accessible to everyone, with must-have features that matter most, and the opportunity to go beyond the everyday with Moto Mods.
“The best part about Moto Z3 Play is it will get better with time as new Moto Mods become available and AI and Moto Experiences get richer.”
