Mobile phone recycling can be a greener way to dispose of technology while making some cash to boot.

But for one woman in Michigan, US, handsets are art materials.

Using an old rotary phone, Amy Shindorf created a lamp, the Morning Sun reported.

It was used as the base of the light, while the cord was stuffed with baling wire for the neck. A recycled bulb sat under a shade made of old telephone directories.

One of Ms Shindorf’s friends, Karla Storrer of the Blind Children’s Fund, said she also enjoys giving items a second life.

"It’s very good for our environment," she told the newspaper. "Besides, Amy might not like me if I don’t."

If making a lamp from your phone is not quite your cup of tea, then earning money is likely to be a much more appealing proposition.

Gaining cash for an outdated or old mobile phone, such as the Nokia N85, also ensures it is disposed of properly and does not leak any harmful chemicals into the earth.
