The iPhone is to gain additional content with the news that an official Pokemon applications are on their way.

Gaining the new apps may persuade individuals to recycle their old handsets and upgrade to the smartphone.

Fans of the Japanese cartoon characters could soon play games with them via the Apple device, as games blog Kotaku Japan has reported an official app is being created for the gadget.

It will be released this summer free of charge for users and will also be available for the Android platform, according to the news source.

Pokemon has previously been available exclusively for Nintendo machines and is expected to take the form of a game featuring cards.
