Consumers on pay-as-you-go deals may want to trade in their mobile phone and look for a contract arrangement, which is becoming increasingly common in the UK.

According to the Communications Market report from Ofcom, at the end of 2010, 49 per cent of people with a mobile phone had a monthly plan in place rather than topping their device up as and when it needs it.

This was up from 41 per cent the previous year, with the watchdog attributing the rise to the number of cheap contracts available from providers.

The organisation claimed that one in five contract deals now charge less than £15 per month.

US manufacturer Apple recently revealed record sales figures for its iPhone during the quarter to June 25th.

According to the company, there was a year-on-year increase of 142 per cent in the number of sales, with 20.34 million of the devices shipped worldwide.
