People who trade in their mobile phones in order to switch to one of the market's latest devices should be able to access the brand new tools on offer from Google Maps.

According to the Google Mobile Blog, version 5.0 of the app – which works on all Android models – now allows users to explore the streets of some of the world's most famous cities in 3D.

It noted that the feature was initially released last December with just a small number of destinations available.

But now, a significant upgrade has been made and 3D views of London, Lisbon, Paris, Barcelona and plenty more are free to view.

All of the buildings within each city are in 3D, so people can zoom in and discover the intricacies of the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace or the Nou Camp.

Google Maps is also a useful navigation aid and road layouts in a number of European countries were recently added.
