Customers of the network Three – or those who wish to join it – could trade in their used mobile phones and upgrade to the HTC Explorer.

That is because the company has confirmed it will soon be stocking the hi-tech smartphone, which is said to be ideal for first-time users of such devices.

It is based on the Android 2.3 operating system and features a 3.2-megapixel camera and, just for social media fans, comes with Facebook and Twitter pre-loaded.

These tools mean it is easy to sync contacts from various address books and share their thoughts and pictures across a number of mediums.

Sylvia Chind, head of handsets at Three, said: "The HTC Explorer offers a fantastic experience for first time smartphone customers and HTC fans alike. We look forward to introducing this handset on our award winning network."

Earlier this week, Three announced it is to offer all-you-can-eat data allowances for £3 a month.
