Consumers with the latest phones are becoming increasingly reliant on them for news, it has been suggested.

Whether it is the Nokia 5800, BlackBerry 8110 or Sony Ericsson W705, 3 Mobile claims its handset users are clearly being kept in the know thanks to its online information resources.

One incident in particular it drew attention to was the unexpected death of Michael Jackson last week, which it noted was responsible for “a record number of hits” on the Planet 3 portal.

David Kerrigan, head of internet services at 3 Mobile in the UK, said the figures reflected a change in the way many people now consume their news – as well as how they pass it on.

“Pay-as-you-go our customers are increasingly using the web on their phones to snack on information and then share news and experiences through social networks such as Facebook and Twitter,” he added.

Earlier this week, 3 Mobile announced revised roaming charges for those visiting the EU.
