Owning the latest mobile – perhaps after selling used phones – could be important to teenagers more than anybody else, after the age group was revealed as huge fans of handheld gadgets.

New research by Ofcom found that more people aged between 12 and 15 would miss their mobile than those who said they could not live without their television.

Indeed, some 28 per cent revealed their iPhone, HTC or Nokia model was crucial to them, while 25 per cent value the internet the most and 18 per cent opted for a television.

It is said that social networking is driving use of the internet among this age group, with sites such as Facebook and Twitter available via the most modern handsets.

Half of youngsters aged between 12 and 15 who own a smartphone visit social networks at least once a week, the study found.

Mobiles are also becoming more popular with online shoppers, as the Interactive Media in Retail Group recently found that the proportion of e-sales made via devices rose from 0.4 per cent to 3.3 per cent from the start of 2010 to the second quarter of 2011.
