Mobile phones have become such an important part of life that most people would be lost without their device but this didn't faze one youngster in Northamptonshire.

Abbie Attfield – a 15-year-old from Corby – offered to give up her mobile phone and using social networking sites for five days in a bid to raise money for charity, the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph reports.

She was inspired to do this by a family friend that suffers from a rare form of leukaemia and the funds will go towards Our Space Appeal at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The magnitude of the task that young Ms Attfield faced is highlighted by the fact that now over 50 per cent of the UK population owns a smartphone.

These smartphones come equipped with social networking sites at their beckoned call.

"The hardest time was when I was bored and didn't have anything to do and would have sat there on my phone," the youngster commented.
