Figures compiled by Gartner show worldwide media tablet sales to end users are forecast to total 118.9 million units this year.
This would represent a 98 per cent increase from 2011 sales, which stood at 60 million.
Apple’s iOS continues to be the dominant force in the tablet market, as it’s projected to account for 61.4 per cent of sales throughout the world.
This should come as no surprise as the iPad 3 – released during the middle of last month – managed to sell over three million devices within less than a week of its launch.
Research vice president at Gartner Carolina Milanesi said despite many mobile phone companies wanting to boost their market share, they have had very limited success when compared to Apple.
“It appears that this year competitors have waited to see what Apple would bring out – because there were few announcements of new media tablets at either the Consumer Electronics Show or Mobile World Congress,” she continued.
