Sony is reportedly planning to launch a smaller version of its flagship Z1 device, which was introduced in September.

The electronics giant previously released a scaled-down handset in Japan dubbed the Xperia Z1F, but an alternative version has appeared on tech site Evleaks.

The new devices features the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and 20.1-megapixel camera as the original handset.

However, it does not have the same polished and rounded corners.

The Xperia Z1S is thought to be the device that will be rolled out around the world, while the Z1F will remain in Japan.

A launch date of January 14th has been leaked, but very little else about the smaller device has been released by the Japanese company, so it is unclear if it will be available in the same range of colours.

The full-size Z1 has been well received since its launch last month, with the company describing the release of the device as a "significant milestone".
