Sony has been devoted to the Android operating system for its mobile phones for a number of years, however, that could all change.

According to The Information, the company could turn to Windows Phone 8 for its next smartphone to be released later this year.

The report says Microsoft is trying to get Sony on-board to help deliver its operating system to the masses and gain it more ground. Although the company's software has been growing quicker than its rivals, its market share still lags behind Google's Android and Apple's iOS systems.

It is thought that Sony is just one of a number of manufacturers that the Windows giant has approached. According to the report, the company has even sliced its software licensing fees to make it a more competitive deal.

This isn't the first time that Sony has considered adopting Windows Phone for its handsets but nothing concrete has come of it yet.
