Consumers who love to download the latest apps to their mobile may wish to sell used phones and switch to one of Sony's upcoming tablet devices.

That is because the electronics firm has teamed up with Adobe Systems Incorporated to promote the development of high-class Android apps.

The Adobe AIR App Challenge Sponsored by Sony will incentivise the creation of mobile tools, with a $200,000 (£124,000) cash prize to be awarded to successful developers.

Sony announced earlier this year that it is producing two tablets, which it noted will be designed to provide the best in hardware, entertainment, content and usability.

"Adobe's creative tooling brings digital experiences to life on small screens and large, unleashing the imagination of millions of the industry's best designers and developers on a new breed of devices," said Hideyuki Furumi, deputy president of VAIO and Mobile Business Group, consumer products and services group at Sony.

Last month, another tablet – the BlackBerry PlayBook – hit the headlines when it went on sale in the UK.
