Social networking will continue to develop and change as people use it, one expert has suggested.
A spokesman for New Media Intelligence, a tailored web monitoring company, said sites likes Facebook and Twitter – which are now often accessed through the latest mobile phones – will continue to attempt to monetise themselves.
Tim Houghton, managing director of the company, said this will be dependent on their popularity and will also rely on social networks not isolating their users with such plans.
"Some of these sites are going to crack that and they’re going to be able to generate some revenue but I don’t think they’ve done it yet," he added.
Mr Houghton went on to liken the situation to that experienced by Google before it was able to develop its AdSense marketing application.
Earlier this month, it was revealed that Vodafone was launching a new application which would give Twitter users easier access to their accounts.
