More people may be trading in mobile phones in order to switch to a device that better supports their social networking needs, if the latest study is anything to go by.

Figures from research body comScore show that the number of users of sites such as Twitter and Facebook via mobile phones in the five leading European markets grew over the last year.

It noted there was a 44 per cent hike in the audience within the UK, Spain, Germany, France and Italy between September 2010 and the same month in 2011.

"We have seen social networking use grow rapidly among mobile users across Europe, driven largely by the growth in smartphone adoption, making it easier than ever for users to stay connected," stated comScore's Europe vice-president for mobile Jeremy Copp.

Orange recently confirmed it is to stock the BlackBerry Curve 9360 White, which is described as the perfect option for social networking.
