Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) could trade in mobile phones and upgrade to smartphones and tablets, with new research suggesting that strategic IT investment is high on their list of priorities.

According to a study by Netgear, 35 per cent plan to increase expenditure on modern solutions in a bid to create a more mobile and flexible workforce.

More than a quarter said such a move was top of their agenda.

Laurent Masia, product line manager of managed infrastructure at the firm, said that while such devices have several benefits, they need a modern network to get the most out of them.

“Businesses will spend thousands of pounds if they invest in tablets and smartphones but these devices need a fast and reliable network to work properly,” he added.

New statistics from IMS Research recently showed that smartphones account for 28 per cent of mobile phone shipments, with 420 million set to be sent around the world this year.
