An increasing amount of evidence is suggesting that the constant improvements being made to mobile phones throughout the world are spurring on news consumption.

The rising use of smartphones has seen an enhanced appeal of traditional news brands among consumers, as well as a boost to long-form journalism.

The key findings of the 2012 report entitled State of the news media conducted by Pew research centre's project for excellence in journalism have also noted that technology companies are gaining increasing control.

This is no surprise given the marked increase in the number of people that own a smartphone, with recent figures from Ofcom stating that just under 50 per cent of all teenagers in the UK now use a smart device.

It found that 34 per cent of desktop/laptop news consumers now get news on a smartphone, while 27 per cent of smart mobile phone news consumers also get the same information on a tablet.
