The smartphone phenomenon could be set to grow in the coming months as an expert claimed that the devices will get cheaper in 2012, which may see more people trying to sell their mobile phone to get a handset.

Head of marketing at Mark Riley said a number of manufacturers that people will have little knowledge of now may come to the fore in the coming months, such as ZTE and Huawei.

Mr Riley said those manufacturers have a good track record for making phones and it could resemble when Samsung came from obscurity into the smartphone world to now dominate.

“I think what will happen in 2012 is handsets will get cheaper. So while it’s maybe £500 now, you can get phones for under £100 that are half decent [in the future],” he added.

Annual predictions for the technology industry produced by Deloitte claimed that there could be more mobile phone recycling as a result of an increase in the number of people looking to purchase second tablets in 2012.
