The role of smartphones and tablets has grown so much that they may now be considered essentials by those who sell mobile phones in order to upgrade.

New research by comScore has found that such hi-tech devices are now responsible for seven per cent of all digital media traffic in the US.

In its report Digital Omnivores: How Tablets, Smartphones and Connected Devices are Changing US Digital Media Consumption Habits, the organisation noted that electronic information is now accessed in a variety of ways.

“The popularisation of smartphones and the introduction of tablets and other web-enabled devices – collectively termed connected devices – have contributed to an explosion in digital media consumption,” stated Mark Donovan, senior vice-president of mobile at comScore.

Consumers who want to join the digital revolution could do so by selling mobiles now and switching to a smartphone.

One of the newest options on the market is the iPhone 4S, which was launched by Apple last week.
