Global annual smart mobile phone sales could cross the one billion unit mark by 2014, as demand in countries such as China continues to grow rapidly.

Sales across the globe are expected to grow 46 per cent to 687.9 million units in 2012 and will reach 1.05 billion units in 2014, Credit Suisse has claimed.

The global financial service claims that Apple will garner a 23 per cent market share in 2012 and will continue to grow in the coming years.

Analysts expect Nokia to drive an earnings recovery in 2013 and gain an 11 per cent market share in the long term.

The rapid rise in the popularity of smartphones has recently been noted by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech,as the firm suggested that over half of the UK's population now owns a handset.

"We see robust growth for the smartphone market in China, which we think will account for 22 percent of global units by 2015," analysts at the firm said in a note.
