Mobile phone shoppers have been advised that it is essential to shop for technology that will last.
A spokeswoman for Waste Watch, a non-profit group that seeks to educate on matters of protecting the Earth’s natural resources, said knowledge of recycling should be spread – but added the products we buy are also important.
Caroline Laitner, senior consultant at the organisation, noted encouraging people to take part in green initiatives should also be backed with informed choices on the gadgets purchased in the first place.
“I think people should be encouraged to buy electrical equipment that lasts properly,” she explained. “There would be less waste in the first place.”
Consumers looking to reduce their waste levels may consider mobile recycling as a way to trade in an old handset to buy a more future-proof model.
The latest phones to boast this kind of technology could be LG’s latest multimedia device – the Arena KM900 – or the most recent gadget to come equipped with the Google Android operating system, the HTC Magic.
