People planning to trade in mobiles and switch to one of the newest and most popular models should consider a Samsung.

That is because the company is now in the hunt to become the world's top manufacturer, according to the latest figures from ABI Research.

The organisation found that the brand enjoyed a highly successful second quarter of 2011, shipping 19 million smartphones in that time.

Such a figure was second only to Apple – which sold 20 million – but Samsung's year-on-year growth of 500 per cent compared to Apple's figure of 142 per cent lead the research body to claim it is Samsung that is set for number one status.

One device consumers could look to invest in is the Galaxy S II, which recorded a shipment total of five million in its first 85 days on the market.

Lisa Gade, editor-in-chief of, recently praised the UK mobile market, naming the Galaxy S II as a model she cannot wait to be available in her native US.
