People selling used phones and switching to a new device could be contributing towards the increasing popularity of Samsung, which may soon become the world’s favourite handset provider.

ABI Research has released figures for the third quarter of 2011 that show the market is growing.

Jake Saunders, vice-president of forecasting, said that while results from all manufacturers are not yet available, the early signs are positive.

In particular, Samsung looks set to launch a bid to become the number one mobile provider, as it continues to close in on Nokia’s status at the top of the table.

Samsung is said to be as close as it ever has been to the premier position and further data from the third quarter may even propel it to the summit.

The T3 Gadget Awards 2011 recently revealed its winners, naming the Samsung Galaxy S II as the best mobile phone on the market.
