When it comes to providing a range of different devices and models for a number of different target audiences, few companies have proven themselves as proficient as Samsung – which is why the company finds itself in place as the largest smartphone manufacturer in the world.

And while its upcoming release is not exactly at the top end of what it offers, its release will be one of the most anticipated of the year. The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini will come to the market with a lower set of specs and a smaller screen than the Korean firm’s flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S5, which was released just under two weeks ago, but the mini range has made a nice little market for itself in recent times.

Designed for people who want a really good smartphone but without the size that the Samsung Galaxy S5 packs, the Mini range has become a real top seller for the firm in the past few years, and although the release of the newest iteration is not likely to come with all the fanfare and attention of the full-size version, it will still be a key point in the year for the company.

So what do we know about the phone so far?

Release date

The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini should follow a similar sort of pattern as last year when it comes to its release date. Samsung likes to stick pretty rigidly to a calendar, and with the Samsung Galaxy S5 having launched just a couple of weeks ago, it will mean that we can expect the Mini within the next couple of months.

Late June is the most commonly rumoured time for release.

The specs of the Mini will be, as always, pared down somewhat from those that have been packed into its bigger sibling, but there should still be enough there for those who are looking for a great device.

However, Samsung can’t afford to chop too much off the specs now that the Mini is in competition with the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact (and Z2 Compact to come), which offers almost identical specs to the flagship but in a smaller casing.

Insiders at Sam Mobile have said that the device will come with a quad-core Snapdragon processor and 1.5GB of RAM, which will put it way ahead of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini of last year in terms of specs.

In addition to this, the phone is most likely to come with a 1280 x 720 Super AMOLED display. However, it is here that its Mini branding will really be tested. Rumours are rife that it will be packing a 4.5-inch screen, which makes the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini actually bigger than the full-size iPhone 5S from Apple.

The potential price for the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is perhaps the most exciting aspect. Again, nothing confirmed as of yet from the company, but it seems like there may be some movement this year.

Samsung is a fan of keeping prices consistent – and last year’s Mini came in at £350 sim free – but it may have to be more competitive this year. With the likes of Motorola Moto G and Google Nexus 5 being real challengers now, we suspect Samsung will perhaps pitch its price a little lower to be more competitive this year. ADNFCR-2155-ID-801716270-ADNFCR
