The recent launch of the Samsung Galaxy S3 has seen a greater number of people selling their mobile phones in order to get their hands on the new device, it has been claimed.

eBay has reported that sales of Android smartphones have risen by 119 per cent over the last month. This suggests that customers have desperately been trying to sell off their old models in time for the flagship phone’s UK release this week.

The eBay figures also showed that sales of Apple’s iPhones have increased in the past month, though this rise has been a more modest 45 per cent.

UK retailer Carphone Warehouse last week revealed that the Galaxy S3 was the most pre-ordered mobile phone of 2012. It is estimated that nine million people have booked the device before its official release.

“We’ve noticed a real trend in consumer selling for a tech ‘upgrade’, but this is the first time anything other than an Apple product has sparked such a selling frenzy,” a spokesman for eBay said.
