Smartwatches have been the topic of many rumours over the past few weeks and the latest indicates that the devices could work with mobile phones.

Samsung is expected to be at the head of the pack when it comes to developing these devices, but it has faced competition from rivals who are hot on its heels, with the likes of Apple and LG both rumoured to be developing their own smartwatches.

According to a new report, the device, thought to be called the Samsung Galaxy Gear, will be used alongside a smartphone and will not be able to make calls as a standalone gadget.

The Verge released the information that also indicated that a combination of Bluetooth and NFC could enable the Samsung smartwatch to connect the device to a handset.

It is expected that the Samsung Galaxy Gear will debut fairly soon with most indications pointing towards the IFA 2013, which is held in Berlin at the start of September.
