This year saw the launch of the eagerly-anticipated Palm Pre on O2, which may have prompted some to consider mobile recycling.

However, an article published on the TechRadar gadget news website this week noted the model has been used as the basis for a newer device that strips out much of the original’s technological wizardry.

It explained that the Palm Pre uses the same Web OS software and, like its predecessor, "is extremely intuitive", but lacks Wi-Fi connectivity and boasts a lower resolution camera.

Despite this, with slimmer, lighter dimensions and an updated operating system, the review went on to suggest that in many ways the Pixi performs much better than the Pre.

"The Synergy technology that combines email streams from multiple services, adds contacts and combines schedules, now works with Yahoo! in addition to Google, LinkedIn and Facebook," it noted.

Consumers recycling mobile phones will find that the Palm Pre is exclusive to O2 in the UK.
