Palm has been out of the game for a while and is pinning a lot of its hopes on an innovative new smartphone, says Michael Oryl in a new article for Mobile Burn.

He explains the Pre is a device that offers a number of features, but the most notable of these is its software platform.

“With webOS, Palm has thrown down the gauntlet and it is time for the rest of the industry to react,” Mr Oryl states.

However, he adds the eagerly anticipated Palm Pre does have some faults that may put off buyers – such as those recycling mobile phones to fund a smartphone upgrade.

Among these are a keyboard that “displeases a lot of people” and a lack of downloadable applications, although this is something that may change over time.

It is expected the Palm Pre will be available on the O2 network in the UK, although no official release date has been set.
