Getting money for an old mobile phone by sending it away for recycling will have both environmental and economic benefits, it has been suggested.

Peter Metcalfe, recycling manager at the City of Lincoln Council, was quoted by the Lincolnshire Echo as saying mobile recycling can help to reduce the damage done in countries such as Rwanda.

The African nation, which hosted World Environment Day on June 5th, is a popular site for the mining of the mineral coltan.

And Mr Metcalfe explained: "There is conflict between the mining of the mineral coltan in the region for use in electronics – including mobile phones – and the survival of gorillas."

The species’ natural habitat is often damaged by deforestation that takes place in order to extract the mineral, but Mr Metcalfe added recycling mobile phones cuts down the amount of coltan that handset manufacturers need.

A number of other natural resources are used during the mobile phone manufacturing process, including gold and copper.
