Consumers considering a new handset may want to recycle their old mobile phone for cash towards a new smartphone.

The top five handsets of 2009 by could provide people with ideas about what they would like to upgrade to and encourage them to trade in their mobile.

Apple’s iPhone 3G is perhaps an unsurprising selection with a range of features, a simple touch screen interface and downloadable applications to make it much more than just a phone.

Meanwhile the BlackBerry Bold 9700 is listed by the website as its “favourite phone of 2009” because it is “seamless” to use. Improvements to previous models such as a sleeker design, a longer battery life, a clear screen and higher resolution camera could all be reasons to choose the handset.

The Motorola Milestone is another choice in the list and the Android phone could set the tone for technology developments in 2010.

Also in the top five were the HTC HD2 and the Nokia N900.
