Technology giant Hewlett-Packard’s (HP’s) new foray into the tablet market could spur some people on to trade in mobiles for the company’s Palm unit, although it faces fierce competition from the likes of industry stalwart Apple.
Analysts apparently believe the Palm software platform is well designed, but expert Michael Holt of Morningstar told Reuters that, while he is confident HP will bring out a good product, “whether they can get a lot of traction this late in the game remains to be seen”.
The news source noted that tablet sales are expected to climb this year to over 50 million units and HP will have to contend with Apple’s next generation of the iPad, Research In Motion’s PlayBook and the Motorola Xoom.
However, the forthcoming PlayStation Phone – or the Xperia Play – could see people tempted to trade in mobiles, as it offers users a slide-out control pad on which games can be played.
