Mobile phone titan Nokia is going through a number of changes, thanks to the recent buyout by Microsoft, however a new patent has taken everyone by surprise.

The filing, spotted by Nokia Power User, suggests that the firm could be joining Samsung and LG by releasing its own flexible handset. The patent gives detail about a "swiss roll" battery that could fold and wrap around itself.

Although the patent doesn't give much detail about how the idea would work, annotations note "the flexible battery ten may be used in a multi-function portable electronic device".
It is similar to a design that Nokia patented last year (2013) but the new one is more flexible, perhaps suggesting that the firm has worked and improved on its previous idea and isn't wanting to limit its possibilities.

The patent reads: "Various embodiments of the invention could be used in any suitable type of portable electronic device such as a mobile phone, a gaming device, a music player, a notebook computer, or a personal digital assistant, for example."
