A decision regarding the next format for mobile phone Sim cards has been delayed by patent disputes between a number of manufacturers.

Apple and Nokia – along with other mobile phone providers – are currently locked in dispute over proposals for new nano-Sim technology, Les Echos reports.

Nokia has threatened to withhold crucial patents if Apple's proposal is adopted, stating that is doesn't comply with the required specifications set out.

Finnish firm Nokia is offering a different card that is said to be 23 per cent smaller and is more in line with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute requirements.

Nano-Sims are set to be at least a third smaller than the micro-Sim technology currently found in today's smartphones.

This stance has been backed by Motorola Mobility – which is in the process of being taken over by Google – and Research In Motion.

The ruling has now been postponed until the end of June.
