More Android mobile phone owners can now download the Nike+ Running app, after an exclusivity contract with operator O2 came to an end.

The tool, which is also available on Apple iPhone handsets, helps joggers monitor their pace by using the smartphone's GPS and accelerometer.

Users who set themselves distance, speed or time targets can receive updates regarding their progress without interruption by setting up the audio feedback function.

A simple button tap activates PowerSongs, so gadget lovers can listen to their favourite tune for added motivation.

Customers can even receive encouragement from their friends and family by sending a notification through to Facebook.

A post-run summary lets customers know how many calories they've burned, making it easy for those who resolved to lose weight in the New Year.

More than one million people have downloaded the app from Google Play for free, and over 10,000 users have given it an average four-star rating.
