Google Maps has launched a new version, which could drive mobile recycling as consumers look to get their hands on a compatible phone.

Users of phones making use of the Android operating system version 1.6 or later may wish to download Google Maps 4.1 from the Android Market now.

Consumers who wish to find their way around more easily could sell an old mobile phone for cash to put towards a new device.

Features added to the application include a widget so that users can keep up to date with the whereabouts of their friends without the need to open the program.

People can also take a look around at street level – for locations that have been covered by the Google car – as the app includes the ability to view Street View.

According to a recent report from independent firm Chetan Sharma Consulting, the value of mobile applications sold will be higher than that seen by CDs by 2012.
