Shipments of smart connected devices such as PCs, media tablets and mobile phones increased to nearly one billion in 2011 and figures are predicted to double by 2016.
Revenues accrued from the 916 million units surpassed $489 billion (£305.9 billion) last year, according to the International Data Corporation's (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC, Mobile Phone and Media Tablet trackers combined.
IDC predicts that shipments of such items will reach 1.84 billion units by 2016, which works out to a compound annual growth rate of 15.4 per cent for the five-year period.
This forecast is down on the predictions of an IHS iSuppli Display Electronics topical report, which claimed that sales of smartphones and media tablets could increase to 2.4 billion units by 2015.
"Smart, connected, compute-capable devices are playing an increasingly important role in nearly every individual's life," vice president of clients and displays at IDC Bob O'Donnell said of the results.
