People who bank with NatWest or RBS have been given a new incentive to trade in mobile phones and switch to a new Android-powered device.

That is because the financial institutions have confirmed the release of a joint app that will allow users of both organisations to access their accounts from a mobile.

NatWest and RBS already have apps for iPhone and BlackBerry owners, so the news will be welcomed by those with an Android.

"Our new Android app means that now even more of our customers can benefit from the convenience and simplicity of mobile banking," stated Satyendra Chelvendra, managing director of consumer distribution at the banks.

As well as checking accounts, users of the apps can view a mini statement detailing the recent transactions in and out of their funds.

The Nationwide Building Society this week suggested that mobile banking has now become more popular than checking social networks via handsets.
