Users may not have to wait that much longer for a mobile phone that will be completely customisable.

Motorola has revealed that its modular Project Ara smartphone is “almost ready”, which would allow users much more say about what their handset does.

Speaking in a Google Chat Hangout, Dennis Woodside, chief executive for Moto, said the ‘Project Ara’ initiative is close to completion.

“There is a [Project Ara] prototype and it is pretty close,” he told YouTube user Marques Brownlee.

It is thought the handset will allow users to chose between their processors, RAM and camera modules.

Explaining the handset concept further, Mr Woodside said: “The idea is you have a skeleton that holds together a set of components and the components slide in and out. If we have the interfaces and the protocols that enable the speaker to speak directly to the CPU then this would all be possible.”
