Research has shown that an increasing number of people are opting for tablets such as the iPad for their new communication devices after they sell their mobile phone.

In 18 months, tablets have come from the wilderness to rival traditional mobile devices and chief executive of Logan Tod & Co Matthew Tod said their research suggested that tablets are growing even faster than smartphones as people take advantage of the online shopping potential of the devices.

“Our research demonstrates that tablets are now growing even faster than the mobile commerce market and it is becoming increasingly evident that one of their primary functions is as online shopping tools,” he added.

Chief marketing officer for Jumptap Paran Johar recently suggested that the drastic growth in tablets as a choice device is due to its larger form factor and will continue to grow in the market this year.

Last week, it was shown that downloads on iPads had reached three billion in just a year-and-a-half.
