Small business owners and people who work from home could be among those most likely to trade in mobile phones in favour of a smartphone over the years to come.

That is because, according to new research from In-Stat, the latest devices will grow in popularity among people working in small offices.

Indeed, in the US, there is expected to be a 44 per cent hike in smartphone unit purchases.

"Employees can now work efficiently either on the road or at home, with access to email and other business applications from their smartphones. This creates a more connected and engaged workforce," explained Greg Potter, an analyst at the research body.

While the drive for smartphones soars, interest in standard mobiles is set to drop by 32 per cent from 2010 to 2015.

One smartphone that is sure to grab the attention of many is the iPhone 5, which is set for release later this year, according to speculation.
