Mobile recycling could be encouraged for consumers looking to upgrade their mobile phone in order to keep up with the latest news developments.

Sky, which already provides broadband internet to customers, has now launched a news service for people who access the internet via their mobile phone.

David Gibbs, Sky’s general manager for mobile, said: “In less than a year we’ve already seen millions of downloads of Sky’s various iPhone apps and the Sky News has been an important factor in this.”

The amount of people using their handset to check the latest news could be set to increase as Mr Gibbs added that the launch of the Sky News application for mobiles would provide customers with a “tailored experience”.

Smartphones – such as the BlackBerry, Apple iPhone and Nexus One – can now access the mobile internet news service.

It has recently been reported that the Sky News application for the Apple iPhone has achieved more than a million downloads.
