An increasing demand for mobile phone applications – commonly used and a major selling point for handsets such as the Apple iPhone – could soon see them overtake CDs in popularity.

By 2012 the value of mobile applications sold will be higher than that seen by CDs, according to a report from independent consulting firm Chetan Sharma Consulting.

Mobile recycling could be one option that people wish to consider in order to receive cash to put towards an upgrade.

Applications such a Spotify are available on smartphones, meaning that users could have a database of millions of songs at their fingertips.

Andrew Shaw, managing director of broadcast and online at PRS for Music, said: "The digital market is steadily growing, both with existing services getting bigger and increased usage and as we licence more legal music services."

He added that the online music market is growing and this is a positive sign.

Antony Keyworth, director of product marketing for Orange UK, recently suggested that a reduction in smartphone prices was leading to more people using them.
