Consumers could be tempted to recycle their old mobile phone in order to receive cash to put towards a new handset which offers on-the-go social networking.

Mobile network operator 3 UK is currently offering free access to Twitter to all its customers and the promotion is set to run until the end of March.

Tweets will be free of charge either through use of an application on devices including the Sony Ericsson T715, the INQ Mini 3G and the INQ Chat 3G or via the twitter website.

Charlotte Blanchard, director of products and services at 3, said: "Our 3G network is built for services just like Twitter, so throughout February and March we’re encouraging our customers to give it a try."

She added that 3 UK is aiming to make the internet as easy and cost effective to use on a mobile phone as it is on a desktop PC.

Music lovers could be interested in using Spotify, which is available on handsets including the Nokia N97 and Sony Ericsson Satio on network.
