Mobile phone users could soon find it easier to get online when out and about, following a recent announcement.

T-Mobile UK and 3 UK have revealed plans to complete their joint network infrastructure upgrade program by the end of this year.

By the end of this year its 3G coverage in the UK will rise to 98 per cent, up from the current level of 90 per cent.

Stephane Teral, principal analyst for mobile and fixed-mobile convergence infrastructure, said: “Based on typical mobile broadband usage of three gigabytes (GB) per month and 20 per cent of inhabitants on mobile broadband, each user can consume one GB per day. This is huge already.”

He added the operator needs to design the network by finding out how many users will be using it heavily and how much capacity is being consumed.

The 10,000th 3G site from 3UK was unveiled in Shooters Hill, London in January this year.
