With the number of voice over internet protocol (VoIP) minutes consumed by mobile phone customers set to rise significantly, trading in an old handset may be the best way to keep up with technology.

Users could find selling their existing handset and investing in one of the latest models will help them be part of the expected surge.

Juniper Research has found the number of VoIP minutes will double each year until 2015, meaning the current total of 15 billion will end up at 470.6 billion.

"There are several flavours of mobile VoIP. WiFi mobile VoIP is potentially the most damaging of all VoIP traffic as it bypasses the mobile networks altogether," explains Anthony Cox, senior analyst at the organisation.

The study by Juniper Research also suggests mobile operators will join forces with VoIP specialists, which could result in an improved service being offered to customers.

Earlier this year, Nokia users were offered the chance to access Skype and make free calls – something that may also have persuaded people to trade in their old phone and upgrade.
